Many gathered at Cassiobury Park’s Peace Garden on Saturday, 6th September, for Spiced's inaugural mental wellbeing event.

The project used the day to promote mental health through cooking and connecting with nature.

It marked the launch of the event, supported by West Herts College culinary department. It featured six stalls, each offering unique taste and stories. Visitors enjoyed a variety of free food, drinks and talks on mental health.

Proceedings began with a speech from Watford Borough Council’s Mental Health Champion, Rabi Martins, who spoke about the importance of being open about mental health. He also encouraged the community to spend more time outdoors, highlighting nature as a key component of wellbeing.

“The main message is for the community to be out in nature as this can really help your wellbeing. Being outside can be great healing for your mental health,” said Rabi Martins.

This idea was echoed by Spiced founder Eva Mbiru, who spoke about the importance of spending time outdoors and championing mental health through cooking. She said she was also pleased to see a diverse group of attendees at the events launch.

‘One of the highlights of today was the amount of people from different cultures who are coming together to celebrate mental health and wellbeing,’ said Mbiru.

The event gave the opportunity for guests to be introduced to the new Spiced allotment in Watford, which aims to give residents the chance to experience wellbeing through cooking. Attendees were further encouraged to make use of the Peace Garden at Cassiobury Park in their own time.

“Another key highlight was that people can be reminded about the Peace Garden here at Cassiobury Park where they can relax and feel at home. Many people who live in the area are not aware of it,” said Eva.

While many stalls focused on healthy eating, visitors also discovered a skincare stall run by Tropic ambassador Dawn Dobson, who showcased natural and sustainable products.

“The public have received the products well, as there is a big change in people wanting natural products and sustainable options,” said Dobson. “All ingredients are made fresh and delivered directly to customers, including oxy-benzone free sunscreen that helps protect coral reefs.”

Local resident Daniel Asiko echoed these sentiments, saying he enjoyed the chance to learn something new about skincare and food.

‘I learnt a lot today about skin care and food for healthy living,’ he said.

Organisers described the event as a success, with plans already underway to return next year and continue promoting wellbeing in the Watford community.
