Watford's creative spirit was on full display earlier this week as the new café, Tina Lakes Coffee and Cakes, opened its doors at Watford Pump House to the public for the first time.
Launched as a lively and welcoming hub for creativity, the new café is run by volunteers from the Pump House and Proud Watford. It aims to support local artists and provide a community meeting space, inviting people to connect over cake and coffee while enjoying an exhibition of local artwork.
Funded by a community grant from Watford Borough Council, the café is open on Tuesdays from 5-9pm, Fridays from 1-5pm, and Saturdays from 1.30-5.30pm.
According to Lee Farman, chairman of Watford Pump House, the café was created to foster creativity and strengthen community ties.
“We’re delighted to be opening this new café and art exhibition space,” he said. “We really hope it develops into a much-loved community meeting place, that brings people together to be creative.”
The café is named after legendary British drag queen Tina Lake, the stage persona of 92-year-old Bryan Timberlake, who attended the launch. Timberlake, the UK’s longest serving drag performer said:
“What an honour to have this establishment named after me, how wonderful,” he said.
Once an old water pumping station for Watford, it has now been transformed into a centre for the creative arts. It hosts activities such as theatre, music, comedy and dance, making it a family friendly space for people of all ages and backgrounds.
With regular exhibitions planned, Tina Lake’s Café looks set to serve more than just coffee. Its first exhibition ‘Meet the Artist’ will take place on 20th September, with Pump House Painters showcasing their artwork for all to see.
