Watford Celebrates Record Breaking Month for Green Travel

Watford Borough Council is celebrating the significant progress of its Transforming Travel in Watford strategy as more residents choose greener and more accessible means of travel.

This record breaking month comes after the introduction of 120 new e-bikes, which were added to the Watford fleet this May, increasing availability across the town and making cycling a more accessible option for people. 

Beryl Bikes recorded 14,218 journeys during June 2026, the highest monthly total since the beginning of the programme in March 2020; this is also a 56% increase compared to June 2025, when 9112 journeys were made.

The latest running figures show that the Beryl scheme has now supported 690,481 journeys and 47,005 unique users, totalling 1,826,754 km travelled, and saving 71.54 tonnes of CO2.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “these figures show that greener and more flexible forms of transport are becoming part of everyday life in Watford. Recording more than 14,000 Beryl journeys in a month is a fantastic milestone and the introduction of 120 additional e-bikes has clearly helped more people to take advantage of the scheme”

The council’s alternative to private car ownership, Watford Car Club, is also making significant progress since launching in 2024. It has attracted 200 members, who have collectively driven over 66,000 miles. The club helps residents who do not own a car or are considering giving theirs up, by providing access to low emission when needed.

Watford residents will be able to enjoy reduced rates on selected car club vehicles, saving £2 per hour and £20 per day, until 12 October 2027. 

Councillor Ian Stotesbury, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Sustainability, said: “transforming travel is not about one single form of transport. It is about giving people practical choices and making it easier to walk, cycle, use public transport, hire a bike, or access a shared vehicle according to the journey they need to make”
