Watford’s community spirit was on full display as thousands gathered at King George V playing field on Saturday, 16th August, to celebrate the annual Watford Community Funday.
Organised by a dedicated group of volunteers, the daylong family event featured live music, food stalls and children’s games.
Now in its second year running and supported by the Watford Borough Council, it featured over 70 stalls. Visitors enjoyed sports games, fitness classes, rides, and complimentary entertainment including live music, dancing and arts and crafts
‘We wanted to bring joy and happiness to our local community with a range of fun activities to get everyone involved,’ said organiser Patricia Blankson.
This sentiment was shared by Martin Whittick, from The Green Heart Project, in collaboration with Friends of the Earth and Butterfly Conservation. The event gave attendees the opportunity to learn about the environment and the importance of its protection.
‘As a community event it is brilliant to get people involved and to inform people about the climate,’ he said.
Other performances included the Revelation Majorettes, a cheerleading group who entertained the crowd with a series of routines, followed by singer Damilola Idris, who performed five songs, receiving a warm response from the audience.
‘Performing my own songs at a local event like this was really special,’ said singer Damilola Idris. ‘They were written during vulnerable times, so the support meant a lot.’
The event was a huge success, with organisers already planning next year’s celebration. Watford Mayor Peter Taylor praised the community spirit: ‘it’s always a pleasure to come to events like this, I think Watford is a brilliant place full of talented people. It’s great when the community comes together like this’.
