
A grassroots football initiative was celebrated as part of South Asian Heritage Month 2025, at Watford FC’s iconic Vicarage Road stadium. The town’s MP, Matt Turmaine, attended the event to mark the 15th anniversary of DesiBallers.
DesiBallers is a platform founded by Zohaib Rashid which aims to spotlight and champion South Asian presence in football on and off the pitch.
The event highlighted the vital contribution of British South Asians to the game and broader society, with powerful messages of inclusion, cultural pride, connection and unity.
Watford Football Club’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion lead, Dave Messenger, said the club was “excited to welcome everyone” along. In addition to Mr Turmaine, others in attendance were local councillors and community leaders, who praised the work of DesiBallers in giving young people a platform in football.
“The goal of events like this is more than just football, they are about identity representation and opportunity. I support DesiBallers and everyone working to break down barriers in sport,” said Mr Turmaine.
The event was organised by Zohaib Rashid and Alan Lau of FA Education based in Hertfordshire. Mr Turmaine answered several questions and said he was “proud” to be there. Explaining how it is important to encourage South Asian communities and ensure they feel “part of what’s going on.”

The evening served as a reminder of the importance of inclusive spaces in sport and the need to keep championing visibility and opportunity for all communities.
