Adithio Noviello is a filmmaker and photographer from Watford who wanted to honour his best friend Oscar, who died in January.
He did the cycle at the beginning of August to raise money for the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) and raised £2,150 to help the charity continue their work.
The 100 mile cycle took three days to complete and began in Hastings, at a café aptly named ‘Oscar’s On The Square’. It ended at Callowland Park in Watford, where Adithio and Oscar enjoyed many walks together and created lots of happy memories.
BAWA is an organisation that aims to do everything within their power to change the lives of animals in Bali, protect Bali’s indigenous dogs, rescue animals in desperate need and fight against the dog meat trade. They also run sterilisation, rabies control and education programs.
When asked why he chose to do a cycle for charity, Adithio said: “I enjoy cycling. I'm not an avid cyclist or anything like that. I do it to have some exercise and be out in nature. Oscar taught me to be out in nature. But there's not a lot of charity runs or cycling runs and stuff that's for anything like this. So I decided that I'm just going to do it myself. Why not?”
“He still is my soul dog. Without even doing anything, he taught me about animal welfare, and that passion grew and grew. I was staying with my family when we first got Oscar, and it's crazy to think that I was in my 20s when I got him. I'm already 38 now.”
Adithio got involved with the charity when he lived in Bali because he missed his dogs back in England. “They employed me as a filmmaker and a photographer so I worked for BAWA to help document the dog meat trade that goes on in Bali, on the island and also in Indonesia. They’re an incredible organisation and they just put animals first.”
