‘I know our community will want to help’- Elected Mayor says in response to Caribbean hurricane crisis

Island nations in the Caribbean Sea affected by Hurricane Melissa are still left in chaos after Met Office named ‘Storm of the Century’ Hurricane Melissa caused mass devastation to many settlements.

This comes nearly a week on since the storm first made landfall, it has claimed the lives of over 60 people, with more potential deaths still to be recorded. 28 of these deaths are suspected to be in commonwealth nation, Jamaica.

All British nationals that have been stranded in this area are now safely back in the UK.

Caribbean influence is a large part of Hertfordshire’s community, with many local authorities showing their support. UNICEF and British Red Cross stations across the county are urging people to donate what they can.

Some residents in the Watford and Hertsmere area have been donating items through the high Jamaican Association in London, with many working together to create survival kits, ready to be used by those who have found themselves homeless.

Watford Mayor Peter Taylor responded to the crisis: ‘My thoughts are with everyone affected by Hurricane Melissa, especially residents in Watford with loved ones in Jamaica, Haiti and across the Caribbean. We know how worrying this time is and please follow the latest guidance of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.’

‘Watford has strong links with Jamaica and Caribbean, and I know our community will want to help. The best way to support relief efforts is by donating cash to trusted charities, ensuring help reaches those who need it most.’

Aid was originally held by the closure of all Jamaican and Haitian airports but is now reported to be delivered successfully.
