Author, Ben Aaronovitch visited Oxhey Library on the evening of the 14th of August for a Q&A and book signing.
Ben Aaronovitch, most known for his Rivers of London series, visited Oxhey Library in order to discuss the latest book in the series, Stone and Sky, as part of a series of events hosted in order to celebrate one hundred years of Hertfordshire Libraries. The events include author visits, children’s entertainment, and the release of a short film to mark the changes the service has seen in its one hundred year tenure.
The London born author detailed his writing in journey, which he began as a TV writer for shows such as Doctor Who and Casualty. He then began working in the Covent Garden branch of Waterstones, where he became inspired to write his own book, after noticing how many new books had been published since he had first started work at the branch. As a result, Aaronovitch developed the idea for his first book Rivers of London.
Rivers of London is a crime and sci fi series, following the character of Peter Grant, an officer in the Metropolitan Police, working in a small division that handles magical and supernatural incidents. The locations for the first books were often scouted by Aaronovitch while travelling around Central London, but have since broadened to include locations in other countries like Scotland and Germany. The series has also expanded to include graphic novel adaptations.
At the event, Aaronovitch delved into the story of how he came to be a writer, as well as giving attendees an insight into his research, and writing process. The talk also included a Q&A segment, where the audience asked questions about Aaronovitch’s latest book as well as his experience as a writer. The evening ended with a book signing where attendees could bring their own books to have signed or purchase them at the event.
