A group of children called the Cassiobury Young Rangers (Junior Division) benefit from from one of Watford Borough Council's funding schemes.
The school has received £1,600 from the Council's Small Grants Fund and working in partnership with the Orchard Project, managed by the council, the group will plant a mix of heritage apple and pear trees local to Hertfordshire.
Teacher, Ruth Lee, said “It’s quite boring sometimes when I speak of seeds, growth, lifecycle, things like that in the classroom. This is learning that they will remember.”
Simon Harrison, chair of the group, based at Nascot Wood Junior School, said “The orchard will provide learning opportunities for the children, educating them in cultivation and production of fruit. It is proposed that the project will tie in with elements of the national curriculum covering healthy eating, mathematics and history.”
The 15 new trees will be planted alongside the existing fruit trees and will form a larger Community Orchard for use and enjoyment by the general public. Park Rangers will also run a series of community activities including Apple Juicing Days.
Local groups and businesses can apply for up to £2,000 extra funding to help towards a community initiative, project and items of equipment. For more information and to apply, visit Watford Borough Council.
