New play area for Verulamium Park?

The current playground at Verulamium Park

Residents are asked to give their views and ideas about the creation of a new children’s playground at Verulamium Park in St Albans.

These will help shape plans for the replacement of the existing play area which is reaching the end of its life. The public consultation continues until Sunday 19th June and is being held by St Albans City and District Council, which owns the park.

Park users can make suggestions on issues such as the play area’s location, the age groups it caters for and equipment types. An initial £50,000 has been set aside for the project using money given to the Council by the developers of King Harry Park for local leisure amenities, though the chosen scheme is likely to cost substantially more.

The £50,000 is a Section 106 planning obligation where a developer agrees to pay financial compensation for the impact of a building scheme. This recognises that an increase in population caused by new homes leads to a rising demand for community infrastructure.

The final budget will also have to be in line with the amount available from further Council funds or from community fundraising and it is hoped that detailed proposals for a new playground will be agreed by Autumn this year.

The project will be complex with various permissions required because the park is part of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Roman Verulamium.

Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We want to create something really special in the District’s flagship park. I’m certain families across the District will have ideas of what they’d love to see in place of the play equipment we currently have. This consultation is the first step to understanding what the community wants and it shows our commitment to making this a grassroots’ project.”
