‘Tales of the River’ project launched in partnership with The National Lottery Heritage Fund

The National Lottery Heritage Fund has partnered with Watford Borough Council on a three-year project to bring River Colne’s past into the present.

The new project aims to create a brand new opportunity for the public to learn about River Colne’s history.

Supporting the ‘Rediscovering the River Colne’ project, the programme will provide a series of exciting and educational events and activities for local communities and schools to take part in.  Helping to strengthen links with the rivers natural heritage, while simultaneously bringing the ever-present importance of Climate change into the spotlight.

According to the United Nations, Climate change ‘refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns…human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas), which produces heat-trapping gases.’

Launching in early 2023,  ‘Tales of the River’ will include a most dazzling exhibition known as ‘Travelling Tales’.  Touring the town, the exhibition will tie together Watford’s and the river’s history. Through the fantastical five senses, it will also highlight not only the ecological importance but also the heritage of the river.

Speaking on the new project, the Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, commented, saying that “We are very pleased to be supported in this way by National Lottery players and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The project will really boost the regeneration works we are carrying out on the river under our Rediscovering the River Colne project and help bring our unique river to life again for Watford residents and its wildlife.”

The National Lottery Heritage fund has invested £8.4 billion in heritage since its establishment in 1994. Due to national lottery players, around £30 million is raised every week for different causes around the Uk.

Utilising money raised by the National Lottery, they continue to resource heritage across the UK, creating enduring change for communities, and their futures.

The project will come to an end with a spectacular celebration at the River Colne festival.
