Met Office issues new weather warning for wind - as two men killed by falling trees

The Met Office has issued a new wind weather warning after Storm Boelo pummelled the UK with gusts of up to 84mph, flooded streets and caused power cuts to 800,000 homes.

The yellow warning is in place from 8pm today until 3am on Tuesday, covering parts of North West England, Northern Ireland, South West England, Strathclyde, South West Scotland and Wales.

The Met Office forecasts gusts of 45 to 50mph inland and 60 to 65 mph along exposed coasts and over high ground.

Strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain at times, and there could be some disruption, the Met Office says.

A 60-year-old man was hit by a falling tree near Castle Douglas in Dumfries, Scotland on Sunday, and a man in his 20s died in north London after a tree fell on his car, authorities said.

Two women were also taken to hospital after they were struck by another falling tree in Aberfeldy, Perth and Kinross.

In a post on X, Scotland's First Minister John Swinney sent his "deepest condolences" to the families and loved ones of those who died.

Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and England's north were hit with the worst of the wind and rain on Saturday and Sunday.

An amber alert for wind ended at 9pm last night, after Britain had endured a weekend of wild weather brought by two storms in three days.

By 7pm on Sunday, about 90,000 customers were still without power, according to the Energy Networks Association, which represents operators in the UK and Ireland.

The equivalent of a third of a month's rain fell in parts of Scotland over the weekend.

Mr Swinney met senior politicians, emergency teams and forecasters to discuss the ongoing response to the weather.

Forecasters have warned that similar conditions will likely return early next week.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said conditions would improve on Monday, before more rain and wind arrives on Tuesday.

"There are more heavy rain and strong winds to come because of a deepening area of low pressure - another one - which is heading towards us," he said.

"All be it, this low doesn't look as deep or is coming quiet as close as Boelo did."

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for strong winds from 3am on Tuesday to midnight for the far north of England, Scotland, and the far northeast of Northern Ireland.

Early on Monday, the Environment Agency issued 10 warnings that flooding is expected and 65 alerts where it is possible.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency said 10 flood warnings and 11 flood alerts were in place.

Meanwhile, Natural Resources Wales reported nine flood alerts were active at the same time.

After the meeting, Transport Scotland's Stuart Wilson said "significant recovery work" was required before the rail network returns to normal.

Train services faced widespread disruption on Sunday, with Northern Rail "strongly advising" people not to travel.

Network Rail Scotland shared an image of flooding at one Glasgow station and fallen trees above the lines near another.

It also shared pictures of a trampoline beneath a train and a shed next to tracks, and asked people living near rail lines to firmly secure their garden furniture.

Speed restrictions were in place across Scotland and several sections of its railways were closed, the operator added.

Some flights were diverted from landing at Leeds Bradford Airport and others were cancelled.

Collapsed trees, cables on carriageways and damaged surfaces also prompted closures affecting major roads in Scotland.

Buildings in Ayr, southwest Scotland, were evacuated by police over concerns they posed a danger, as well as a caravan park in Ballantrae, around 33 miles away.

Emergency services were called to a flooded care home in Sidney Street, Saltcoats, North Ayrshire, on Sunday evening.

Storm Boelo followed Storm Austen, which brought strong winds to southern parts of the UK on Friday.
