Update your wardrobe sustainably at Watford's Clothes Swap

Fancy a whole new look this Autumn? If the answer is yes, then a free sustainable event this Saturday (1 October) could be the perfect way to freshen up your wardrobe.

Residents are being invited to bring along clothes they no longer wear and swap them at Watford Clothes Swap.

Hosted by Watford Borough Council in partnership with Veolia and WasteAware, the event is a fun, cheap and environmentally friendly way to declutter your wardrobe and try out a new style.

Taking place from 10am at Watford Museum, attendees will be able to donate up to 10 pieces of unwanted, adult-sized, good quality clothing – which will earn you one token per item.

Between 11am to 12:30pm, residents will have the opportunity to come back and exchange their tokens for items to take home. Any surplus clothing from the event will be given to a local charity shop.

The fashion industry is responsible for around 2-8% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.

The trend for ‘fast fashion’ has resulted in more than half of items purchased being thrown away in less than a year.

Each year, an estimated £140 million worth of clothing is sent to UK landfill, according to the charity WRAP. This equates to around 350,000 tonnes.

Hertfordshire County Council found residents throw over
7000 tonnes of textiles into their rubbish bins every year unnecessarily – when they could have been reused, repaired or recycled.

Darren Harding, Senior Contract Manager for Veolia, said: "By taking steps to reuse clothes items before throwing them away, we’re not only preserving resources as part of our dedication to ecological transformation but we’re helping residents save money and building a more sustainable community.

“We’re proud to support the Clothes Swap and hope to see as many Watford residents as possible updating their wardrobe on the day.”

Items which will not be accepted as part of the clothes swap include: accessories (including jewellery and bags), nightwear, swimwear, underwear garments, children’s items and shoes.

All clothing must be in good clean condition. Items that have shrunk, are stained or need repairing will not be taken.
