Shock result as the Wood beat Orient

Borehamwood in action against Leyton Orient.

Borehamwood pulled off a shock result in the National League beating Leyton Orient 1-0

In the seven league games leading up to today’s fixture, Borehamwood had won just one, whilst top of the table Leyton Orient were unbeaten in all of them.

The Os, who were the visitors at Meadow Park this afternoon, started with an unchanged team from their last league fixture. Luke Garrard, though, was determined to win, changing Danny Woodwards for Femi Ilasnmi, and starting Bradley Ash ahead of Justin Shaibu. Perhaps the Wood manager had an instinct that Ilasnmi would make a difference, because it was his name that ended up on the score sheet, firing home for the underdogs in the 4th minute.

The Hertfordshire side didn’t seem to have much of a struggle for the majority of the game; however, in the dying minutes of each half, one did wonder whether the home team would be able to hold on.

It was a victory that no doubt will have given the Wood a huge boost of confidence as they went 11th in the National League. For Justin Edinburgh, though, Salford City losing 2-0 to Chesterfield means that his side are still sitting reasonably comfortably at the top.

All in all, the attendance was high and with the Orient supporters bringing over 1,000 travelling fans, making it an excellent atmosphere! Whilst there were no stand out injuries or red cards to report, Garrard seemed visibly disappointed with the officials throughout the 90 minutes. The wind was relentless, and the weather was miserable, but for Wood fans there was nothing that could spoil their day.

Borehamwood will look to have a repeat of today’s performance next Saturday as they host Torquay United in the First Round of the FA Trophy.

Elsewhere in local football Stevenage lost 1-0 at home to Lincoln City in League Two, Barnet also suffered a defeat away at Ebbsfleet in the National League and St Albans City (National League South) drew 0-0 in a local derby with Wealdstone.

There was a victory for Hemel Hempstead beating Dulwich Hamlet at home 1-0 in the National League South.
