One mistake made by many is being a bit too shy, becoming a hermit and making your student flat a safe haven to hide in. I did so myself. The environment is new, you most likely have NO family, NO friends around you. You'll feel alone and shut yourself in with a jar of Nutella to pick at watching a TV show. (I never said I was proud of doing this.)

There are many things to do in fresher’s week, from comedy shows to clubbing events. To avoid being “that guy/girl”, just say hi to your flatmates. That’s a start. You’re all in the same shoes; coming out of the old comfort of home into the new of uni. Make the best of it and socialise. Sometimes being quiet can come across as coldness. So go for it and talk with randoms. Get to know each other and go from there! (You will get tired of “So what do you study?”, or “How big is your room?” questions but the pain is worth it!)

Don’t go to every event!

It may seem contradictory, but please DO NOT GO TO EVERY EVENT! Peer pressure will be screaming down your ear to “go hard or go home”, but health is as important as socialising. Going on a 7-day bender isn’t exactly the best way to start university. Wearing yesterday’s vodka or beer as perfume and donning bed hair doesn't sound appealing either. First impressions are very important. You will be spending 3 years with classmates and lecturers, getting to know and becoming great friends with them.

What you should do instead is balance sleep and rest with the things you want to do the most. Also, please THINK ABOUT YOUR STOMACH! Food is just as important! There’s nothing more satisfying than returning with treats (so much Nutella!) AND fruit and vegetables after a £30 shop. (OK now I feel really old!!)

But hey, we are still here and every day is a blessing so Merry Christmas!!

…..and even if you don’t celebrate Christmas odds are you are going to get caught up in the festive season and here are a few tips on how to stay healthy over the coming weeks - pay attention because it could save you a lot of time and effort in the New Year as you won’t need to shift any excess weight!

Let the learning begin!

1) Think about why you really need to indulge in all the cheese, crackers, biscuits and massive tins of chocolate that appear at this time of year. Make this the year that you do not get caught up in the unnecessary sugar, fat and gluten items in the shiny packages with Santa on the front and instead create some amazing buffets with vegetable and fruit trays, lay out some prawn platters, steer away from the salted peanuts nuts in the tins and crack open (literally) nuts that are still in the shell. They are everywhere this time of year so get them while you can! Keep you and your loved ones “Merry and Light”!

2) If you have been reading my previous blog posts you will know that staying away from processed foods and only eating one ingredient foods is always the order of the day but do your family and friends know that? No? Well let’s give them the gift of health education this year. Host a healthy holiday gathering. Ask each guest to bring a dish – appetizer, entree, side, salad, dessert, drink, etc., to the party. At the same time make sure you tell them exactly what to bring and what kind of foods are acceptable. The rule is they must make it as delicious as possible. See who comes out on top, amazing what a little competition brings out in people.

3) Exercise! Don’t forget it, especially during the holidays!! Do something different and make it a family activity – get outside and go for a walk, head to the playground and put a little family exercise circuit together. Whatever you do keep active, it will help with not only keeping your appetite in check but you will find it an awesome way to relive stress as well!

4) Turn out the lights. Sleep!! During this high-stress season it’s more important than ever to make sure you’re getting adequate shuteye.

5) Stay hydrated – with WATER!!! Thirst is often confused with hunger. Dehydration might drive you to the box of chocolates and also leave you drowsy. Choose water instead of eggnog, cider, alcohol, cocoa, soda, and juices. Save room for the good stuff – the food!!

6) If you are going to indulge then make sure you enjoy your FAVORITE seasonal treats in moderation. (A whole tub of ice cream is NOT moderation!!) Be careful though, once the brain gets the stimulation of sugar and or refined carbohydrates it craves more of it, sometimes uncontrollably and what was going to be just once chocolate turns into a whole box before you know it. Enjoy yourself but be mindful, greed is not good!

7) Try thinking a bit more about the Christmas Dinner. What is it really? Well, if you are careful then it can be an amazing meal of lean protein and loads of wonderful vegetables. It is only when we start trying to make it elaborate that we make a mess of things so stay away from the gluten laden gravy and make your own, be careful of the high sugar sauces and use only the best grass fed goose fat to roast your potatoes!

8) Been invited out? Got a Christmas work party to go too? Then make sure you are well prepared in advance. Find out where you are going and know what is going to be there food wise, that way you know what to avoid and what to choose when you get there. By being prepared in advance there will be no hasty decisions to be made when the time comes

.

9) Keep in mind the true meaning of the holidays. It’s not about food, presents, decorations, and parties. It’s about being with the people that we care about most. As long as you remember that; you are sure to maintain your health, sanity, and waist size this season.

10) New Year’s Eve let the party get started!! So it’s New Years and the drinks are flowing, everyone is in the party mood, you have a whole New Year to look forward too, new goals to achieve and New Year’s resolutions everywhere you look. Same as last year? Same as every year? Do it differently this year, if you have a drink on New Year’s Eve, make it one at midnight and make it a really good one! Have the finest champagne or other tipple of choice and here is why. Like food, the better quality the product the more pure and less toxic it will be. If you’re choosing a spirit have one that is triple distilled, the best red wines will have the most resveratrol (an amazing antioxidant) and if you are going for beer, make it gluten free and organic (yes, you can buy them). Your body will thank you the next day and you will be clear headed and able to face the New Year with excitement and enthusiasm instead of a headache and a fry up!

Whatever you decide to do have an amazing time, I wish you and your family and wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year!

Paul Burgess SAC dip. Many times it creeps up on us as we neglect our health with a poor diet and lack of quality sleep. At first, it is not too bad but then the rut gets deeper and deeper and soon you are living off of coffee and Red Bull just to make it through another day so that you can make it home and crawl into your bed for another night of restless sleep, sound familiar? If it does then maybe reading this blog may help you to break out of the cycle and restore some of that bounce you once had!

People will tell you that they are tired because they have such a hectic life, the kids take all their energy, keeping up at work is just too stressful as well as a million other reasons why they just feel and look exhausted. The problem is it is not the odd day here and there, this is something that many people feel on an ongoing daily basis, for many years. Life is not meant to be endured, life is meant to be enjoyed and having a zest for life everyday is one of the best ways to live life to the full!

So, let’s look at some ways to up that energy and get that spark back!

Firstly the obvious one is to try to get more sleep. The more quality sleep you get the better and the key here is QUALITY sleep. It is no good going to bed after having a day full of coffee and other so called ‘energy’ drinks. Although you may have not had any stimulants since the afternoon, the central nervous system is still being stimulated as much as 6-8 hours later. You may get to sleep but the sleep will be disturbed and restless which is why so many people wake up after being ‘in bed’ for 7 or 8 hours but feel so exhausted. They may have been in bed but they were not really sleeping. Getting a good night of deep, restorative sleep is crucial to increasing energy and feeling refreshed when you wake up.

Help your sleep quality by making sure that your room is pitch black, you really should not be able to see your hand in front of your face. Do not watch TV or look at a computer screen within an hour of going to bed. The light will stimulate parts of the brain and keep you from a restful sleep. Try reading a book (not a tablet device unless it has a specific setting for pre-bed reading) for 30 minutes before bed as it will help to relax the mind and send you off into a deep sleep.

Exercising regularly is another great way to increase energy levels. Sounds kind of counter intuitive, trying to exercise when you have no energy, but try it. Start of slowly by walking a little more than you normally would, perhaps walk to the station in the morning instead of getting the bus, you know the kind of thing. You’ll be surprised at how energized you feel after. Physical activity brings oxygen to the brain and reduces stress. Once you feel your energy getting better then you can start to add in a bit more strenuous exercise by lifting some weights or following a workout video. There are literally hundreds of thousands to find on YouTube, just pick on you like the look of and away you go. One of the best ways to exercise has been around since the beginning of time, yes you guessed it, sex! It releases a cascade of hormones that will not only help your body but it’s a great way to get to relax before bed and get a great night’s sleep. Do it often, its free, it doesn’t make you fat and it improves your energy, what more could you ask for!

While you exercise make sure you are taking in lots of fluids, in fact another great way to increase your energy levels is simply by drinking more water. Now I know what you are saying, ‘I hate the taste of water, I just can’t drink it,’ Sorry but that’s a load of BS. Water is the fluid nature intended you to drink, you are made up of 75% for goodness sake, do you really think Mother Nature would have made you dislike water? Err, no, all that has happened is that you have become so accustomed to drinking sugary drinks that real, clean, fresh water has become bland to your taste buds. Probably started when you were given juice as a child. Well now is the time to grow up kids, start drinking your water, your body and your energy will thank you for it.

One of the major causes of low energy is stress. Emotional stress is a particularly energy sapping activity and it can come in all sorts of guises from all sorts of people. Try to look at the people you spend most of you time with, are they draining you of your energy, are their problems becoming your problems? If you are feeling that some of that energy should be yours and not given to them then find a way of correcting the balance. Now, I’m not saying that you should ignore your friends and leave your kids with the neighbours every day but just make sure that you factor in some time for yourself so that you can restore your energy.

Schedule in regular relaxation time, meditate or just spend some time outdoors in nature, all of these will help you get a real sense of energy back in your life.

By far and away the best way to improve your energy is with your daily nutrition. What you eat will have a direct impact on your energy levels. Give your body highly processed, poor quality convenience foods washed down with ‘energy’ drinks and coffee and all you will get is fat and tired. Start to give your body a nutrient dense diet of fresh foods with plenty of water and you will see a marked improvement within days. Not only will your energy rise but your waistline will shrink, kind of a win win in my book.

Focus on eating a wide variety of lean proteins; fish, beef, eggs, chicken, turkey as well as all the exotic meats you can now get (personally I do like an ostrich steak now and then), good fats; coconut, avocado, nuts and seeds as well as fresh fruits and vegetables each day.

With this in mind, below are a few energy boosting recipes to get you started:

Crispy Coconut Chicken With Coconut Rice

A tropical sweet delight, Crispy Coconut Chicken is the perfect healthy dinner dish. Here is the first problem: the media are influencing your expectations to believe that both the above are possible and that you will get results in the promised time.

To achieve the results in this short time means creating a large calorie deficit and increasing your energy output to unusually high levels. Less calories in more exercise. It is a tried and tested way to ensure rapid weight loss and lower numbers on the scales, but at what cost?

By dieting this way you will not lose much fat but mainly water and muscle fibre/tone so if your goal is to be squidgy and look like a deflated balloon just so the scales show a lower figure then be my guest. On the way you will also effectively slow down your metabolism and down regulate most of your bodies everyday functions as it feels that it is in a starvation mode and will want to conserve energy.

This is the reason that people look and feel so bad when they crash diet. The body will do all it can to preserve energy stores (that's fat by the way) and it will dispose of anything that it does not need that uses energy (muscle fibre). It will also try to adapt to the low calorie intake by slowing down its metabolic rate and burning less energy.

This then creates the next problem, once a client decides enough is enough and begins to eat again (and they will) they are then putting excess calories into a reduced metabolic rate. Even if they just go back to eating the same as they were before they started the diet, they will put on weight as their metabolism is no longer running at that rate. So, not only do they put all the weight back on but they add a few extra pounds too, sound familiar?

So, in my mind the worst advice you could ever get about developing a nutrition plan is to focus on weight loss!

What is the alternative? Nowadays it’s very different, we have extended light hours due to the use of electric lighting, we have distractions and disturbances to keep us awake longer than we should be. Things like TV, Computers, mobile phones, I Pads etc. etc. all keep us from going to bed at a reasonable hour. Then, of course we have all the other reasons, children, work, shifts, etc.

So how do we go about getting better sleep? Try blacking out the windows and definitely DO NOT have any stand by lights on TV’s or illuminated alarm clocks. A really easy and cheap way to darken your room from outside light is to use some kitchen foil taped over the windows, you will see how much light you actually block out and be amazed how much better you sleep.

If you feel wide awake at night try using some tulsie tea or other relaxing herbs to put you in a more restful state.

Spend a few minutes writing down all the tasks you have to do tomorrow and then rest knowing that all will be delt with. Find out what his fitness age is and the advice he would give to his 18-year old self.

Hi Guys and Gals, I had a bit of fun this week and used an online calculator to work out my supposed ‘fitness age’. Disappointingly I came out as 32 which, as a 47 year old, would seem OK but I still think I’m 18 so work to be done by the looks of things!

Now, as I said, it was just a bit of fun and I do not put a huge amount of credence into the calculator as far as accuracy goes but it did get me thinking... What if I were 18 years old again? If my goal was to stay as fit as an 18 year old, what advice would I give myself? And, indeed, why would it be important?

Sometimes when I have thoughts like this and go deep into my own mind I really should take an adult with me because it brings up some very frank conversations with myself! Anyway, that aside, the constructive elements that came out of it were intriguing indeed.

Firstly, as an 18 year old I would not have taken on any advice as clearly I knew it all and no one knew better (sound familiar?). However, let’s just pretend that I did have an open mind and that I was passionately interested in keeping myself as fit and healthy as possible, what would have been the first useful piece of advice I would tell myself?

Time goes quicker than you can ever imagine. Use everyday to its fullest advantage because all too soon you will be 30 years down the road and still thinking ‘I really must get around to doing (fill in the blank) soon’. It is true, 30 years can go by in the blink of an eye (although 60 seconds at full sprint on a spin bike can seem like an eternity, but I digress) and if you don’t have a plan for each day of your life then life will have a plan for you, be in no doubt that in 30 years you will surely arrive, the question is where?

How productive could you be today if you really wanted too? What have you been putting off for ever that you always wished you’d do? Goals are very personal and everyone has a different set of motivations in life but how many of you really follow your dreams? Are you in a job that you are not totally passionate about? Do you ever spend a day working and thinking that the time goes so slowly as you watch the clock go tick tock, tick tock? If you do then I plead with you right now put a plan in place to change it! What are you waiting for, the perfect time? Oh wait, I hear you, ‘the times just not right at the moment, I’ve got bills to pay, a mortgage, family’ blah blah blah. Guess what, the time will never be perfect and there is no better time than now! Do not waste another minute doing something you are not passionate about, do something that gets you up early and keeps you up late. Do something you love so much that the hours in the day just fly by and you lose track of time. Do this now and in 30 years you will be in a place you could have only dreamed of.

Do not stress so much about what other people think of you. In fact just do not stress so much full stop! Instead get excited about creating an amazing life each day. Think more about who you can help and how you can help them rather than what they think of you. Do this everyday and soon you won’t need to worry about what people think of you because they will tell you to your face and it will be all about what a wonderful person you have become.

Do not ask anything of anyone before adding value to their life first. (Go back and read point 2 again). As youngsters we all want to get ahead, heck many of us think it’s a right we have to expect others to help us and even get annoyed when we find out life just isn’t like that. It takes many people many years of life experience to realise that the saying, ‘as ye sow, so as ye reap’ is actually pretty much the way life pans out. If you remember each day to give as much as you can to helping others then you will find out very quickly that the world is actually on your side and not against you!

BEWARE, if you approach this from an attitude of manipulation people will see right through you and nothing will change. In other words, do not go out with the thought of, ‘right I am giving of myself so you lot better pay me back and quick!’ People can sense someone who is not being genuine very quickly, don’t be that person.

Look after your gut and everything else will fall into place. This is probably the most powerful key to youth and longevity there is. Keeping your gut healthy will ensure that all the food you eat is absorbed but more importantly it will stop you getting most of the signs of ageing. It will also mean that your energy levels will be through the roof all day and that you will get deep rejuvenating sleep every night.

Sleep more! The phrase ‘I’ll sleep when I’m dead.’ Will just bring the ‘dead’ part into being a lot quicker than you had planned! Sleep deprivation will make you hungrier for the wrong foods, more likely to have an accident, not look your best, or most approachable, more likely to catch a cold, lose brain tissue, more emotional in a non constructive way, less focussed, poor memory, higher chance of stroke, obesity, cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Oh and if you’re male, lack of sleep lowers your sperm count! Still think sleep is for whimps?

Exercise everyday! Do something you really enjoy everyday, weather it is traditional workouts in the gym or just walking the dog, do something active everyday, our bodies are designed for it and thrive on it. A word of caution, long, endurance type training (long runs over 45 minutes or any activity that is at a constant raised heart rate for a long period of time) will have the same effect on your body as ageing. This type of activity promotes oxidative stress to the cells and muscle wastage which are not helpful in keeping your fitness age down. Swap your long distance runs for some hill sprints for 20 minutes, you’ll get a much better effect! Also remember any activity is great for your body, think outside the box a bit and mix it up, when did you last go horse riding or carry the shopping home on foot instead of using the car?

Meditate. Yes I know this all sounds a bit woo woo but meditation is one of the best ways to stay young and stay focussed. It will help you make the most of everyday (going back to point 1) and allow you to deal with any stress you may find in your life a lot more efficiently. Nowadays its so easy to just download a guided meditation track, pop your headphones on and bliss out for 20 minutes. Try it for a week and I guarantee your life will change.

Make your nutrition the very best it can be. Use only the highest quality ingredients and do not complain about the cost. The benefits it gives you far outweigh the price and when you see yourself fit, well and full of vibrant energy it will be well worth it. Eat more lean protein, good fats and vegetables do not get caught up in the sugar frenzy of the 21st century. Remember, if a food (or so called food) needs to be advertised to sell it then do not eat it! Believe me, those models you see on the ads are not eating those burgers or pizzas and if they are, they have no energy and feel like crap every day of their lives!

Have more fun and SMILE! Make sure that you find some way to ‘play’ each day. Don’t be one of the people you see on the train every day who just look exhausted and tired of life, be someone who can’t wait for tomorrow to come!

Educate yourself. We are in an age where information is available at the touch of a button, websites, blogs, podcasts, dare I say it books (books were still available in shops and online at the time of writing this article), video programmes, distance learning courses the list goes on and on. Always better yourself by learning new skills and knowledge.

Do not wait until a certain time to be happy. All too often I hear people say, ‘when I get that job, then I’ll be happy’ what’s wrong with being happy now? Think about this chain of events and you decide when you should be happy; ‘I’ll be happy when I leave school!’ actually, ‘I’ll be happy when I get a job’, no no, ‘I’ll be happy when I meet someone special’ ‘I’ll be happy when we get married’, ….. ‘when we get a house’……..’when I have children’ …….’When the kids have grown up and left home’………’when I stop working and retire’……how about not waiting to be happy someday and just be happy today!

Have a daily routine that is fun and exciting that allows you to encompass all of the above. For example make sure that each day you exercise, eat amazing meals, meditate and have exciting goals to aim for before sleeping soundly. If each day was like that, what could you achieve in 30 years time?

The most important one in my mind, spend more time with your family. They are the most important part of your growth and development. Spend time with them now, not when it’s too late. Nothing is more important as this will affect how they live their life after your life is over.

Don’t spend all your life living in the same place. Statistics show that 90% of people are born, live and die within a 12 mile radius! There is a big old world out there waiting to be explored so go out and see as much of it as possible. These chemicals are responsible for the effects of pain reduction, relaxation and a sense of euphoria. These effects soon become addictive and often is the only reason people keep up their exercise routines even though there are some negative effects to long term, endurance activities in the form of oxidative stress (premature aging) and muscle wastage.

From an evolutionary point of view the exercise high probably played a major role in human evolution. When the going got tough (like when a saber tooth tiger was right on their heels or when they were chasing down dinner), euphoria and pain reduction would have been invaluable so as you can see, from very early on, man has used the genetic instinct of inducing pleasurable and beneficial chemicals into the brain.

To achieve the release of these chemicals it takes about an hour of endurance training but the good news is that short-term anaerobic training also produces significant levels of the pain reducing feel good chemicals.

Olympic weightlifting also causes elevations in endorphins, so low-volume resistance training, no more than ten or fifteen seconds of actual honest work, but the intensity must be high, is also an option so as you can see, there is an exercise for everyone to choose from!

Overall, it’s high intensity anaerobic work that produces the biggest endorphin rush.

Spicy Food

OK, so we are going to take a slight detour from what we do WITH our body and look at how what we put IN our body can influence the way our brains produce feel good chemicals.

While it's true that some people despise spicy foods, a good portion of us love the food and crave it on a daily basis. We live for hot peppers, fiery-hot wings and spicy seasonings on top of just about everything, you can even get chocolate with chilli for the more adventurous among us.

Thankfully, spicy foods are generally good for us. Though heart health, cancer prevention and weight loss are reasons enough to add more spice to your life, there are some smaller, hidden benefits to eating spicy foods as well. These include:

Boosts mood. Spicy foods increase serotonin in your brain, which makes you feel happier. Serotonin also helps you relax and feel less stressed.

Helps relieve common cold symptoms by increasing your metabolism and working up a sweat.

Promotes restful sleep. Those who consume spicy foods regularly have a faster and easier time falling asleep and staying asleep.

Capsaicin (the main spicy component in peppers) can release beta-endorphins and adrenaline. It also has analgesic properties which may induce a pain relief effect in the body

Do something exhilarating!

Ever thought of jumping off a bridge with some elastic rope tied to your feet? Or driving at breakneck speed around a race track? How about diving off a high cliff or snowboarding down a treacherous mountain side testing your ability to control the uncontrollable? If you have then you will know exactly the feeling you get, one of huge excitement mixed with the feeling of potential death! The result is a rush of powerful hormones, including adrenaline, dopamine, and beta-endorphins (which correlate closely with reports of euphoria). Your heart works harder and faster, sending more blood, more quickly to the muscles as well as the brain. Your senses are heightened. Time slows down. Moments linger longer than ever before. It’s all a stop-gap mechanism to help you survive the situation.

What we’re drawn to is the intense, hyper-real focus and awareness that our body produces as a response to the incredible insanity of the situation. It’s not about the risk itself as much as a testing of skill against the very immediate, potent backdrop of survival.

Be loving to yourself and others.

Do you remember the first time you ‘fell in love’? Now I have put quotation marks here because as young teens we rarely know what ‘love’ is but it’s the feeling that I’m talking about.

Falling in love is the ultimate high in most people’s book. Your behaviour becomes totally irrational, you feel invincible and walk around with a big grin on your face for days on end. You want to spend every waking moment with this person and feel broken when you are apart. Remember those days of heady summer romances?

Well, a review of studies has shown that at least twelve different brain regions are activated during these times by a cascade of chemicals like dopamine, adrenaline, vasopression, serotonin, and oxytocin when we fall in love. Endorphins and PEA (the chocolate/love drug) also play a big role in the neurochemistry of love. As a result, we feel happy and dopey. Confused and excited. Anxious and confident. We’re a mess, basically, but somehow it feels amazing.

Now make sure you hear me here, I am not encouraging you to go and search for a new relationship if you are already in one. But if you are already settled down with someone now is the chance to make the most of that relationship. Spoil your partner, act like it is the early days. Experience them in the fullest possible way. Recall those initial romantic days and do it over again. Relish good memories. Make new ones. In a couple words: be present.

Nature

Have you ever really thought about how you feel when you are outdoors in a beautiful setting? How does it feel to spend time in nature among trees and open spaces?

It seems that just being out in nature does your body, mind and soul some good. According to a 2009 study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, the closer you live to nature, the healthieryou're likely to be. The study took an objective look at 345,143 Dutch people's medical records, assessing health status for 24 conditions, including cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological diseases. The records were then correlated with how much green space was located within 1 kilometer and 3 kilometers of a person's postal code. And what did researchers find? People who lived within 1 kilometer of a park or a wooded area experienced less anxiety and depression than those who lived farther away from green space.

You will have probably experienced the tranquil and relaxed feeling that a walk in nature gives you, spending time on the coast, breathing in fresh sea air. It is one of the most popular reasons people go on holiday, even if they do just spend time by the pool. Nature is a great energy and mood booster, here is something you can do today to get some benefit; find a patch of grass, take off your shoes and socks and just walk around for about twenty minutes feeling the grass beneath your feet. Just doing this promotes a feeling of calm relaxation, it grounds you to the earth and helps re-establish your electrical balance, a kind of bodily reset. Try it, you will feel very at peace.

Sex

OK, fine, sex had to come into it at some point and why not! Having sex releases anabundance of drugs, hormones and neurotransmitters. During arousal, your body secretes the powerful stimulants adrenaline and noradrenaline. Your heart is racing, your blood pressure rises, all in the service of delivering extra blood to various important body parts. Upon climax, your bloodstream is treated to an intoxicating cocktail of prolactin, oxytocin (a.k.a. cuddle time), phenethylamine (levels of this love and chocolate chemical peak at orgasm), and dopaminefor all around opiate-induced bliss.

There is also an abundance of pain relieving chemicals released into the body creating a euphoric sensation. How do you feel when you hear it? How does your mind and body react? Do you get goose bumps and chills? If you can’t then you need to start to bring more of it into your life. The weirdest part of all is that it has a mind of its own and you cannot control it. If something is really, truly funny, you’re going to laugh and there’s not a thing you can do about it. With this information you can be sure that every day you are eating the exact amount of calories you need. Is that important……….err…………….yeah THAT’S IMPORTANT!

Here is why, most people eat a fairly random amount of calories every day, even if they are on a diet. They may be following a prescribed diet plan but the amount of calories they are given to eat in a day is very much a guesstimate. You can find countless diet calculations to give you the amount of calories you should be eating if you are trying to lose weight or even put on weight but they cannot take into account your activity for that day, they can guess but they cannot know.

Here is where using a monitor like the FitBit (there are others available but I use this one) comes into its own.

Let’s say you are trying to lose weight. To lose weight you need to do two things:

- Be sure you eat a healthy, nutrient dense, anti-inflammatory diet

- Eat less calories than you burn each day. In other words be in a calorific deficit, usually around 500 calories.

The reason 500 calories is an appropriate deficit is it allows the body to tap into fat stores for energy without feeling it is going into a starvation mode. If you cut calories too much your body will just slow down its metabolism and hormonal function and this is not good for long term health and fitness so it is important we do not drop too much below that level.

When using a calculation that is assuming your activity levels it will tell you to eat the same amount of calories every day. However do you think you should be eating your 2,000 calories on days when you have been out playing with the children all afternoon or been too the gym and burnt more energy? What if you had to run around all day organising something and didn’t stop all day? Your energy expenditure would be far higher than normal and therefore you would need more food that day to make sure that you stay only 500 calories under your energy expenditure.

Now on the other hand, what if it is a lazy Sunday and you spend a lot of time just sitting around not moving very much or you spend a lot of time sat at a computer, you calorie expenditure for that day is going to be less than normal so if you are still eating the same amount then you risk over eating and not keeping to your deficit. No deficit = no weight loss.

In steps the FitBit, it tells me how many calories I have burned that day and I can adjust my food intake accordingly meaning I am always eating the right amount no matter what I have been doing. For me personally my days range from as little as 1,900 calories burnt in a day when sitting around writing blogs and emails to 4,000 calories on a really busy day so as you can see if I ate the same amount of calories every day then I would be way off the mark for my goals.

The FitBit also monitors your sleep. If you are not aware of how important sleep is then I encourage you to go and read my blog on sleep, needless to say it is probably the most important part of your day when it comes to overall health. By monitoring it you can see, not only how much sleep you are getting (most of us do not get enough) but also the quality of the sleep, how many times are you waking or restless. Knowing this and seeing it in front of you gets you to take action and make some changes to improve your sleeping patterns. I believe that without it may people will continue to suffer poor quality sleep causing many health issues that can be avoided. Again, read the Sleep blog if you have not already done so.

Water intake, do you drink enough? Are you sure? By monitoring this on a daily basis you can make sure that if you get busy you do not forget to get your 2 to 3 litres in a day. Many people think they drink enough but when they actually monitor it they realise that they are under hydrated most days. Not drinking enough will affect every aspect of your health so keeping on top of it is vital.

You are also able to monitor your exercise and take the extra calories burnt into account so if you have used the rowing machine for 20 minutes, for example, then you are able to measure the amount of calories and add them to your daily expenditure.

Every week I am also emailed a weekly over view of my data allowing me to see how I have progressed from previous weeks and where I can possibly improve on things next week. I find having visual graphs and measurements keeps me on track and helps when planning the next weeks approach.

The one area that the FitBit is lacking is the food input part of the app so I use….

MyFitnessPal

This is a free app that you can download onto your mobile device and is a great tool for monitoring your food intake. It is very easy to use, has an inbuilt list of foods, measurements, calorie, fat, protein, carbohydrate, fibre etc. values and syncs to FitBit.

By inputting everything that I eat or plan to eat (more about that in a minute) I can see how much protein, fat, carbohydrate and fibre I am eating and adjust things accordingly if I need too. The app will also tell FitBit what I have eaten which then gives me the information I need about calories left to eat, or not as the case may be!

By planning my day somewhat I can input my food for the day before I eat it. This is easy for me as I tend to prepare most of my food in advance so I know what I will be having. Once the foods have been input I can see if I need to increase carbohydrate, fats, protein or fibre in my remaining meals later in the day to make sure I hit my optimum macronutrients.

Sometimes I may need more fats and protein so I may opt for a meal of mainly beef steak whereas other days I may need more carbohydrate so I may opt for a meal made up of sweet potatoes with some bananas for dessert.

Regardless of your goal, knowing exactly what you are eating and how much of it and then knowing that it is the correct amount for your daily calorific goal is a major benefit that is far more useful than just an arbitrary figure plucked from a calculator on the internet.

As a side note, in case you are interested, when I first started using this approach I personally lost 3% body fat in 2 weeks while my weight stayed the same. That may not sound impressive but believe me, losing body fat and keeping your muscle mass is a difficult trick to pull off.

So when looking to eat properly, the FitBit and MyFitnessPal are my choice of apps. They allow me much more accurate monitoring of what is going in to my body based on the energy I am expending. This may all sound like hard work, in putting this and that, but the results speak for themselves. I would rather put a little effort in each day and be lean, strong and full of energy than overweight, tired and desperate for a solution.

GymBoss

Another favourite app of mine is GymBoss, it is essentially a timer application that you can set for your individual needs. As well as having many built in templates, you can create your own which is really useful when using interval training as your chosen activity.

When interval training you basically work really hard for an amount of time, say 20 seconds, then you rest for a period of time, say 15 seconds. Training this way has been proven to help burn more calories and in particular burn more calories from fat stores.

Using a timer is necessary and the GymBoss is probably the easiest and most feature packed there is. Be aware though, you will have a love hate relationship with it because I am sure the work seconds are way slower than the rest seconds!!

Take A Break! Your central nervous system and hormonal system are two of the areas of your body that get the greatest benefit when you just sit down and bliss out.

Again I have written a blog all about the benefits of daily meditation and it is well worth a read to see how your body, mind and soul reap incredible rewards just with a bit of relaxation each day.

Take A Break is an app that has two preloaded guided meditations specifically for busy people. One is 7 minutes long called the ‘Work Break’ which is ideal to make the most out of a quick lunch break. The other is 13 minutes long and titled, ‘stress relief’ this one is slightly longer and reduces the feelings of stress you may be experiencing so it is useful to use as and when you need too.

Both of these meditations are perfect for daily use, they do not take up much time so can be fit into even the busiest schedule. Try it out and you will wonder why you had not done it sooner.

Paul Burgess SAC dip.
