Watford 10K to Support Local Mencap Children's Centre

Organised by Watford Mencap, the annual Watford 10k run will take place on Monday 4th May in Cassiobury Park, following the ever-popular Bluebell Route.

This year, for the first time, all proceeds from the race will be used to help fund Watford Mencap’s Children’s Centre which supports families with a child or young person that has a learning disability. The Centre has been described as a ‘lifeline’ by many families, as it is the only facility of its kind in the area that welcomes all children, no matter how severe their disabilities. It provides school clubs, play schemes, nursery groups, a youth club and a toy library for over 150 children with learning disabilities in the Watford and South West Herts area.

Runners of all abilities are invited to take part in the Watford 10K, from experienced athletes to those new to running and in addition to the main 10k race, there is a timed 3k race for younger athletes as well as a 1k children’s run. Places are still available for runners to sign up, and can be booked online at Watford 10K.

Local Watford Mencap support workers, Neil Palmer and Andy Melville, are training hard to take part in the forthcoming Watford 10k. Andy Melville said “I’ve worked at the children’s centre for 12 years but this is the first time that I’ve entered the 10k. The training is tough but it helps having Neil to motivate me and keep me going.”

Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden will be sponsoring the event and any runner raising over £25 in sponsorship for Watford Mencap will be entered into a draw to win a family ticket to Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter.

Dan Dark, SVP and Managing Director, Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, said: “This is a fantastic community event which we are really pleased to be supporting. The facilities that the children’s centre offers are invaluable and every penny that is raised through sponsorship will be put to good use.”

For both runners and spectators there is a Race Village with toilets, refreshments and trade stands and more details can be found at Watford 10K.
